The original version of the Isokon Penguin Donkey Bookcase was designed by Egon Riss in 1939 to hold Penguin books. It was named the Donkey because it had four legs and two panniers. The space between the side-compartments could be used for magazines. The shelves in the bookcase were just the right size to house the distinctive orange-covered Penguin paperbacks. Shortly after the Donkey had been launched, the Second World War broke out, and both the publication of Penguin books and the production of the Donkey were ceased. Only about a hundred Donkeys had been made.
